I’ve been a happy owner of the Google Pixel 4a 5G for several years, but battery drain led me to start looking for a replacement and it stopped receiving security updates in 2023. And, while it was still a capable phone, the Snapdragon 765G chipset and 60 Hz display were from 2020. Since the Google Pixel 11 was released last month, I found the Google Pixel 10a unlocked on sale so I decided to upgrade. And for reference I use Verizon’s Visible unlimited mobile service.
I held on to the Pixel 4a 5G longer than necessary because I loved the rear fingerprint sensor for unlocking the screen. I even tried upgrading to the Google Pixel 8a a while back and returned it almost immediately because of issues with the front-facing, under-display fingerprint sensor.
- Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
The Google Pixel 10a includes a Gorilla Glass 7 and a Tensor G4 Processor with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of UFS 3.1 storage. Additionally, the Pixel 10a runs Android 16. Compared to my Pixel 4a 5G, all of these features are significant upgrades. Additionally, the Pixel 10a includes 7 years of updates including OS updates and security patches.
What Changes Most in Everyday Use?
Battery and screen. Being several years old, my Pixel 4a 5G’s battery life was less than a day. I was charging multiple times a day just to stay above 70% charged. The Pixel 10a’s battery, with a rating of 30 hours of use, far exceeds the 4a 5G’s battery and solves my battery anxiety. The 4a 5G’s screen had a refresh rate of 60 Hz. The 10a has a much smoother 120 Hz screen.
Pixel phones can already take great pictures, but with the 10a, Google takes photo processing on a smartphone one step further. As with other recent Pixel models, the 10a uses Google’s AI and processing onboard to perform advanced photo editing and touch ups. Using Best Take, for example, users can pick the best, or most appropriate, face in a burst of photos to share, if more than one person took the photo looking away. Google says the Magic Editor and Eraser can also edit and move pictures to improve photo composition. The phone can even use artificial intelligence to help sharpen blurry photos with the tool Photo Unblur. The 10a can even perform processing to improve videos, as well.
How Much Better Is the Display and Build Quality?
Compared to the Pixel 4a 5G, the Pixel 10a is visually and structurally more advanced. The Pixel 10a’s display is high-refresh rate, has a resolving (and therefore, a smoother) draw, and is protected by Gorilla Glass 7. Unlike its predecessor, the Pixel 10a has an official IP rating, meaning that it is officially protected from dust and can be safely used in certain wet environments. While its back is protected by a polycarbonate cover, like the Pixel 4a 5G, it has a better, more refined, and more pleasant to the touch, matte cover.
The most distinct change from the Pixel 4a 5G is that the Pixel 10a no longer has a protruding camera, and as a result, is much flatter. However, because of the removal of the bulky camera housing, the Pixel 10a does not have a camera bump. Skipping the camera housing does give the Pixel 10a a more pleasing design than the Pixel 4a 5G.
Is the Improved Fingerprint Reader Reason Enough to Switch?
Google opted to use the less expensive optical under-display fingerprint scanner on the 10a vs. an ultrasonic scanner like the ones found on the other Pixel flagship models i.e Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 11. The Pixel 8a I sent returned to Amazon 2 years ago used an earlier generation of this scanner technology and was colossally frustrating to use.
Most times, I ended up having to enter my PIN because the reader could not read my fingerprints. However, with the Pixel 10a, the reader is considerably better. Occasionally I will still have to enter the pin to unlock but it’s infrequent and usually because my finger angle is slightly off. Even with Gorilla Glass 7 I still use a screen protector, the thickness of the protector can difference. Regardless, it’s a noticeable improvement from the Pixel 8a.
Performance, Storage, and Battery Expectations
The Pixel 10a uses the Tensor G4 which is nearly a two-year-old chip, and Google did not change it. Against a Snapdragon 765G, it is not close, but shoppers expecting a 2026 flagship silicon upgrade should set that aside.
| Spec | What you get |
|---|---|
| Chipset | Tensor G4 |
| RAM | 8GB (no larger option) |
| Storage | 128GB / 256GB, no microSD slot |
| Battery | 5,100 mAh, 30+ hours |
| Wireless charging | 10W |
The Pixel 10a is available in a 128GB model or a 256GB model and storage is not expandable so you have to buy the storage you need up front.
How Does It Compare With the Pixel 9a, Pixel 10, and iPhone 17e?
| Pixel 10a | Pixel 9a | Pixel 10 | iPhone 17e | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starting price | $499 | Lower, if in stock | Higher | Higher |
| Chipset | Tensor G4 | Tensor G4 | Tensor G5 | Apple A-series |
| RAM | 8GB | 8GB | 12GB | Apple silicon config |
| Telephoto camera | No | No | Yes | No |
| Android updates | 7 years to 2033 | 7 years to 2032 | 7 years | iOS updates |
Year over year, the 10a brings a brighter screen, a better modem, and new software, as one review of the 9a-to-10a gap points out. If you own a 9a, stay put.
The Pixel 10 buys you a faster chip and a telephoto lens for meaningfully more money, and the iPhone 17e only makes sense if you want iOS.
Pixel 10 Qi Wireless Charging
As an early adopter of Google Nexus 5 and Google Nexus 6 phones which supported wireless charging, I was excited to to try out wireless charging on my Pixel 10a, so I purchased the Anker Zolo Qi2 charging pad. I placed my Pixel 10a on the charging pad and even with the Spigen Liquid Air case which is not Qi2 supported, the charging pad detected my phone and started charging. But I have since learned that is not the recommend setup.
The Pixel 10a is capable of charging at a rate of up to 10W but does not have Pixel’s snap magnets. The Anker Zolo is a Qi2 magnetic charging puck designed for iPhone 12 and later. It is not recommended for the Pixel 10a, which supports Qi charging but does not have Qi2 magnets.
The charging pad can also charge the Pixel at 15W, but Anker warns that charging speeds may be impacted if a case is being used and that the case should not be a Magnetic case. The Liquid Air Case is a thin TPU case and does not have Magnetic elements.
The Spigen Liquid Air Case does support standard wireless charging and I’ve seen that it can work with the Anker Zolo but it’s not the recommended configuration.
It charges if I set it down very precisely and if the phone is centered. There is no audible click. It will also not hit Anker’s 15W charging speed at 10W, and the session can be lost if the phone moves.
Naturally, it is better to use a wired USB C rapid charger. Although it works it’s not officially supported. It is best to follow the manufacturer’s limits, use the right adapter.
To be clear I have never tested charging my Pixel 10a on the Anker Zolo puck. I will be replacing the Anker Zolo and using a Qi pad that is designed for the Google Pixel 10a.
Why the Pixel 10a is a Great Buy
The Pixel 10a is a bargain midrange phone. With it’s price point, a lot of great features can be expected. Users can enjoy a large 6.3 inch display with 120Hz refresh rate, and a super bright OLED display with a peak of 3000 nits. The Pixel 10a also has a long lasting 5100mAh battery and a tough design with Corning Gorilla Glass 7 and an IP68 rating. Additionally, users can expect 7 years of software and security updates.
Cameras and Media
The Pixel 10a has a great 48MP primary camera with OIS. With a wider FOV, the 13MP ultrawide lens also sees a significant bump in quality when compared to other ultrawide cameras. Like other Pixel phones, the 10a excels at video capture thanks to its gyro EIS. Although Google has marketed this phone as the best camera under $500, other reviewers also agreed that the 10a is one the best budget phones, especially in the midrange. Like other Pixel phones, the 10a lacks a telephoto lens.
Hardware, Editing, and Support
The Pixel 10a has a lot of features controlled by the phone’s hardware instead of the cloud. The phone also has a ton of editing features and a call dashboard. With software support for 7 years, the Pixel 10a is expected to receive updates past 2033.
Connectivity, Dual SIM, and Satellite SOS
This phone is equipped with 5G, Bluetooth 6.0, and Wi-Fi 6E. For connectivity options, it has dual SIMs (one nano and one eSIM). Additionally, it supports Satellite SOS. It can connect to emergency services even when there is no cellular or Wi-Fi service available. The availability of these features depends on location and service providers. It is also worth noting that the radio used in this model is the first of its kind on the A-series Pixels and it is free, courtesy of Google, for a limited time.
Audio, Charging and Ports
It has stereo speakers that support video calls and audio output. The 3.5mm headphone jack is not included, and it may require the use of Bluetooth or the USB-C port for audio output. It supports wired chargers at 30W and wireless chargers at 10W. To charge it to 50% it may take approximately 30 minutes. No charger or wireless charging pads are provided by Google.
Who Should Buy It
This phone is a great option for people looking for a high quality camera under $500. It is also a great option because it will be supported and updated for many years. 2032 may seem far away, but the updates will help it function like new for many years. It is currently being offered on sale on Amazon , making it even more enticing.
It is not necessary to buy this phone if you recently purchased a Pixel 9a. If you need a phone with a telephoto lens, or want a phone with a high RAM capacity and storage, this phone is not for you.
Conclusion
The Google Pixel 10a shows what’s possible in midrange smartphones. Thanks to Google’s light software, great after-purchase support, a surprisingly good camera, and the inclusion of Qi wireless charging, it feels like they gave you the important features and skipped the fluff. Because of this, it’s a great option for a lot of people. Whether it’s a gift to help someone make the switch to Android, an improvement from a friend’s outdated phone, or a back-up phone for yourself, the Pixel 10a makes a great choice in any situation. I am very happy with my purchase after upgrading from the aging Google Pixel 4a. Thanks for reading.
