Motorola Razr 2025: Best Foldable Phone?

I recently upgraded my aging Pixel 4a to the the Motorola Razr 2025 foldable phone. The Pixel 4a is still a perfectly good phone but I wanted to upgrade and the latest generation of foldable smartphones are really impressive. The Razr 2025 is a clam shell style foldable maintaining that classic flip phone look which appealed to me more than the larger book style foldable phones which fold along a vertical axis such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, or the One Plus Open. Without a doubt though, aside from the foldable coolness factor, the real selling point of the Razr 2025 is that it’s probably the most budget friendly foldable phone you can get. There are foldable smartphones costing double.

Motorola Razr 2025 | Unlocked | Made for US 8/256GB | 50MP Camera | Pantone Lightest Sky
  • Universal unlocked: Compatible with all major U.S. carriers, including Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and other prepaid carriers.
  • Iconic design, now even more durable: Ultra-compact flip design featuring a stronger hinge plate made with titanium, beautiful finishes, and curated Pantone Colors.
  • Access what matters even when closed: Easily use your favorite apps on the 3.6" external display, all without having to flip open the phone.

From budget perspective the Motorola Razr 2025 is an excellent example of a small, innovative and functional flip phone that has many qualities to make it easy for users to perform simple operations without having to open the phone. Camera quality and battery life seem to meet user needs for their average day-to-day activities, but some customers have indicated that the cost and expected durability for a flip phone are not what they expect from other phones.

Users who appreciate style, portability and convenience will likely find the Motorola Razr 2025 to be a perfect option. It is not designed to be the fastest or most capable phone in its category. Rather, the Motorola Razr 2025 is designed as a cutting edge foldable phone that is both functional and affordable and is great conversation starter when you take it out.

Overview of the Motorola Razr 2025

The Motorola Razr 2025 is a foldable phone that focuses on convenience rather than just the novelty of a smartphone that folds in half.  When doing my research for new phone this clamshell foldable regularly appeared in best foldable phone rankings alongside much higher priced models like the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7.

The Razr actually has 2 screens. The external screen is on the backside and allows you see notifications and even interact with apps when the phone is closed. This is a handy feature  because it lets you handle common tasks without opening the phone. For example if you’re listening to music while the phone is closed the album cover and song details will be displayed on the external screen. Or for example you can scroll through your photo gallery using only the external screen.  Being able to use the phone when its folded not only saves time but also and reduces wear on the hinge.

Battery life has been great so far typically going the full day before I need to charge. The phone also supports wireless charging which is more convenient than always having to plugin the USB C cable.

Ultra-Compact Foldable Design

Smartphones having been getting bigger and in turn taking up more space in your pockets. This flip style foldable was designed to take up as little room as possible while maintaining durability. Similar to other modern flip phones, the Razr will fold up into a compact shape that can fit into the smallest of bags or shallow pockets while leaving space for other things.

The hinge on the Razr 2025 is confidence inspiring. I find it takes a little pressure to open the screen making the phone feel secure while it’s fully open. Furthermore, when closing the phone and putting back in your pocket it feels solid and I don’t worry about it accidentally being pried open by other stuff in my pocket. The fold line on the internal screen is noticeable if the screen is off but not when the screen is being used which is appreciated.  Technically one can open the phone with one hand but it’s a little awkward so I typically use both hands to open and close the screen.

Strengths of the design are:

  • Compact footprint when folded
  • Solid construction at the hinge
  • Distinctive color finish

There are some compromises though. The folded thickness is thicker than most standard slab phones; and the taller shape might not accommodate smaller hands as well as larger ones. Compared to my previous Pixel 4a the Razr 2025 is longer but narrower. Nevertheless, the Razr’s design offers better balance between portability and functionality than several other foldables in its class.

3.6 External Display Functionality

Being able to interact and use the Motorola Razr 2025 when the phone is folded is a core design feature. You can accomplish routine activities without having to have the phone open, which will enable the user to complete the short interaction or quickly check what they needed to check with minimal effort.

As stated earlier, the outer display on the Razr 2025 is able to run common applications instead of just displaying the user’s notifications. Although the user is limited to using the outer display (versus the main display), the fact that the user does not have to physically flip the phone open in order to view their messages, receive navigation prompts, or control the music allows the user to perform these actions in a convenient manner.

What works well

  • The ability to access apps for brief tasks makes sense in terms of usability.
The size of the outer display provides enough space for readable text and for the user to make touch inputs.
This design enables the user to be able to use the device one-handedly while performing a short task.

What may frustrate some

  • The external screen has real utility, but it is still cramped and not suitable for many tasks
  • It shares surface area with camera lenses which make the screen smaller

In summary, the outer display of the Razr 2025 truly enhances the user experience and the way the user interacts with the device. However, the outer display should not replace the functionality of the main display, but should enhance its functionality.

Overall, the external display adds real utility, but it works best as a complement, not a replacement, for the main screen.

50MP Moto AI Camera Performance

Smartphone cameras get better and more capable every year and that holds true for this phone as well. The Motorola Razr utilizes a 50MP camera with Moto AI to guide the exposure, color balance and scene detection without requiring much user interaction.

Most photos appear to be well-balanced and clear in most daylight scenarios. The AI processing does help improve the chances that you won’t miss the shot since it is able to adjust the settings quickly and automatically, making it suitable for casual photography and for rapid capture situations. Below is a photo I took at home during the day without any special lighting.

That being said, the performance in low-light conditions can be inconsistent. Detail can become soft or blurry in these conditions and while the AI adjusts to ensure brightness (not always an issue) some users may not appreciate the loss of detail in exchange for light.

The video performance of the Motorola Razr appears to be pretty good. Although I have not recorded many videos yet it does appear to be more than capable of creating smooth videos for normal situations or sharing on social media.

Overall camera takeaways:

  • Strong performance in typical lighting
  • Helpful AI assistance with minimal setup
  • Less consistent detail in darker scenes

Vibrant 6.9″ Main Display Experience

The Razer 2025 foldable phone display is taller and narrower than my Pixel 4a. While it is a vibrant screen the shape is taking some time for me to get used to. I would not call it an immersive screen. The display is intended to have a high level of smoothness and clarity in its video and graphics, but does not is not too bright or over-the-top in terms of color.

While the Razr 2025 has a great deal of smoothness in how content scrolls across the screen (i.e., there is little-to-no “stuttering” when you scroll), the touch response on the screen is quick and the interface feels modern and stable. While text remains clear at typical viewing distances, the Razr’s large screen layout is good for apps that are designed to work best vertically as opposed to horizontally.

What works well

  • Smooth on-screen motion that reduces visual stutter
  • Clean, balanced colors that avoid harsh contrast
  • Ample space for multitasking and media

Where it falls short

  • The tall shape may feel unwieldy for one-handed use
  • Folding displays still show subtle creasing under certain lighting

In general, the primary display in the Razr 2025 was created to provide you with a usable and consistent experience while using the device, and did not focus on providing an overly flashy experience.

All-Day Battery Life and TurboPower Charging

As with the improved camera quality, the Razr battery life is also improved but how many hours between charges do you really need?
According to Motorola, the Razr 2025 should be able to last a full day under normal use (i.e., light camera use, some media consumption, occasional messaging, etc.) before needing to be recharged again. This is ideal for anyone who has a long commute or anyone who does not want to have to recharge their device multiple times per day.

But when the battery is low, Rapid charging is available. The Razr supports TurboPower so you’ll be able to charge your phone quickly enough to minimize downtime from using up your battery.

Naturally there are trade-offs. Battery life depends on how intensively you use your phone.  The balance between all-day battery life and the ability to charge the phone quickly is a good compromise for a compact foldable phone that focuses on ease of use rather than sheer battery size.

AI Integration and User Personalization

The Razr 2025 has native AI functionality and smart assistance is an integral part of using the phone and how it adapts to your individual behavior. For example, the Razr uses AI from Motorola to assist the user in taking photographs, accessing applications and completing typical tasks through minimal user input.

What works well

  • AI-driven camera processing adjusts scenes and lighting automatically, reducing the need for manual tweaks.
  • Personalized suggestions help when using apps and tools based on your usage patterns, especially on the external display.

Where it falls short

  • Some of the AI functionality requires logging into account(s)
  • Some of the AI feels superficial and lacks fine-tuning

In general, the Razr’s AI features are focused on providing subtle assistance rather than providing automation. While it does improve the user experience by making common tasks easier, it doesn’t dramatically change how the device functions.

Pros and Cons

This foldable phone targets people who want something different without abandoning everyday smartphone basics. This clamshell foldable is often cited among the best foldable phones for users who prioritize a compact footprint.

Pros

  • Compact foldable form that closes down small but opens to a full-size experience, which many users find easy to carry and satisfying to use.
  • Outer screen usefulness stands out, allowing common tasks without opening the device, which adds convenience during quick interactions.
  • Camera results generally meet expectations for everyday photos and videos, with consistent performance across lighting conditions.
  • Smooth setup process when switching from other Android phones, reducing friction during initial use.
  • Unlocked compatibility works across major U.S. carriers, giving buyers flexibility without carrier lock-ins.
  • Battery endurance often lasts through a full day of mixed use, which suits typical daily routines.

Cons

  • Display crease remains visible in certain angles and situations, especially during close inspection or precise touch input.
  • Durability concerns appear in some feedback, particularly after accidental drops, which may worry users expecting ruggedness.
  • Performance stability can vary, with reports of heat buildup, slowdowns, or unexpected restarts during heavier use.
  • Value depends on price, as some buyers feel it competes best when discounted rather than at full retail.
  • Software experience may feel unfamiliar to users coming from other Android ecosystems, requiring an adjustment period.

Durability and Real-World Usage

I’ve been using the Razr 2025 foldable phone for a few weeks and my daily usage has been pretty good. The foldable design continues to work fine on daily opening and closing; the hinge has remained firm and has not loosened or become unstable.

Generally, the crease in the screen fades into the background, and is only noticed when the screen is off or when I deliberately try to look at it. As a reminder do not put an additional screen protector over the factory installed screen protector.

Doing my research before purchasing I read reviews with complaints from people who had dropped their Razr and caused damage that was not covered by warranty. Handling this phone is different from a slab-style phone and is taking some time for me to get used to. I did not buy an additional warranty from Amazon so dropping the phone and damaging it is probably my biggest fear.

What stands out

  • The hinge design shows improved resilience with repeated use.
  • The outer display reduces how often users need to open the phone.

Concerns

  • Accidental drops can lead to costly damage.
  • Some users mention heat buildup and occasional instability during everyday tasks.

Conclusion

I bought the Motorola Razr 2025 a few weeks ago and so far have been pretty happy with it. It’s strengths lie in its foldable design and its outer screen, which not only displays notifications but also allows users run apps without having to open the phone. This phone is a good option for anyone looking for a compact foldable phone with a modern look and feel without having to pay a high price.  When folded it is a little bulkier than a traditional smartphone but it’s also half the length and easily fits in the palm of your hand or small pockets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some frequently asked questions I came across when researching this phone before upgrading.

How does the camera quality in the Motorola Razr 2025 compare to its predecessors?

The camera on the Motorola Razr 2025 has improved in terms of the quality of images taken under various lighting conditions. Compared to previous Razr models, images captured by the Razr 2025 tend to be sharper and more consistent. However, while it provides a competitive level of image quality, it is still considered not among the best in the industry.

What improvements have been made in the Motorola Razr 2025’s durability and build quality?

The hinge and overall structural integrity of the Motorola Razr 2025 have both been strengthened. User reviews indicate the Razr 2025 seems more solid and sturdy in terms of opening and closing versus previous versions of the Razr. And so far this is confirmed by my personal experience. The hinge action is solid. However, even though the Razr 2025 is structurally stronger than previous generations some user reviews indicated experiencing damage after accidentally dropping their Razr 2025. Purchasing a case would likely solve this challenge.

What are the most commonly reported issues with the Motorola Razr 2025 by users?

User reviews highlight a few recurring concerns rather than a major flaw. The most discussed issues include:

  • Occasional heat buildup during demanding tasks
  • Performance slowdowns in specific scenarios
  • Isolated reports of unexpected restarts

What are the pros and cons of investing in a Motorola Razr 2025 according to tech experts?

Pros

  • Compact foldable design with a useful outer display
  • Improved camera reliability over past models
  • Competitive pricing within the foldable category

Cons

  • Performance does not lead its class
  • Durability still lags behind non-folding phones
  • Software experience may feel different for users coming from other ecosystems

How does the battery life of the Motorola Razr 2025 stand out in real-world usage?

Under normal daily use, the battery usually lasts the entire day without needing to be charged. This represents an improvement over previous Razr models which could not provide a full day of use at a moderate workload.

Heavy use may tax the battery, particularly if you are using the large internal screen and multitasking. Although TurboPower fast charging may help to alleviate this problem, the battery life of the Motorola Razr 2025 is average rather than excellent.
